Daruma is a popular lucky charm in Japan and the popular Japanese Daruma doll without arms and legs represents the founder of Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma, whose arms and legs withered away after nine years of meditation in a mountain cave. The Daruma doll always gets up after being pushed, and according to the Japanese, it falls down 7 times but gets up 8 times. The Daruma doll thus represents an ideal in Japanese ethics: a symbol of rebirth and a belief in never giving up.
