Murano glas

Murano Glass

Hand-blown Italian glass art from the Venetian island of Murano. A centuries-old tradition of color, technique, and form.

What is Murano Glass?

Murano is not just a place, but the name of an entire glassmaking tradition. Murano glass is mouth-blown glass art, created by glassmakers who have refined techniques, colors, and shapes over generations.

What characterizes Murano glass is not just its appearance, but the process itself. Each piece is shaped from molten glass using manual skill and experience. Small variations occur naturally in the work—and that is precisely why no two objects are alike, whether they are glasses, lamps, or decorative items.

The History Behind Murano Glass

The history of Murano glass dates back to the 13th century, when glass production was moved from Venice to Murano due to the risk of fire.

This marked the beginning of a concentrated tradition of craftsmanship, in which techniques were further developed and safeguarded by the local glassmakers. Over time, Murano grew into a center for experimental glasswork featuring new colors, shapes, and methods.

It is this long lineage of craftsmanship that can still be felt today. Every piece of Murano glass bears traces of a technique that has been passed down, refined, and preserved over the centuries.

Vintage, Unique, and Mouth-blown

It is rare to find objects that are both handmade and functional, while also serving as small works of art in the home. The Murano lamp strikes just that balance—whether shaped into soft swirl patterns or bold colors, it has a look that feels both striking and timeless.

Murano glass is known for its vibrant color combinations and its ability to capture light. This applies not only to glass and lamps, but also to bowls and vases, where the material is allowed to unfold into organic shapes and plays of color. Each piece is shaped with a precision that makes it practical for everyday use, yet still distinctive in its expression.

Unique Murano Finds

Many of our finds are vintage and exist as one-of-a-kind pieces. This also means that each item is only available once—once it’s sold, it’s gone for good.

At Studio Hafnia, you’ll find a selection of Murano drinking glasses, vases, and bowls, none of which are alike. Many of the finds are vintage and exist as one-of-a-kind pieces. Once sold, it is gone forever. That is precisely what characterizes Murano: the imperfect, the handmade, and the feeling of something that cannot be recreated.
