Tændt Asano Paper Moon PM02 papirlampe i washi med varmt lys i et mørkt rum

Asano

For more than a century, Asano has carried on the tradition of Japanese paper lanterns in Gifu. Today, Asano combines washi paper, bamboo, and Japanese craftsmanship with a contemporary design expression.

About Asano

Asano is a Japanese family workshop based in Gifu, a region known for its long tradition of paper lantern production. The company began by making traditional Japanese chōchin lanterns and, over generations, has continued the craft of shaping and assembling paper lanterns by hand.

Today, Asano continues this same craft tradition while collaborating with contemporary Japanese designers. The result is a collection of simple paper lamps, where traditional materials such as washi and bamboo are given a modern expression.

Washi and the Craft Behind It

An important part of Asano’s lamps is washi, traditional Japanese paper, also known as Japan paper. Washi is known for its fine texture, lightness, and strength. In Gifu, the delicate Mino washi is used, known for being both thin and strong and traditionally used for Japanese paper lanterns for generations.

Asano continues the traditional use of washi and bamboo in handcrafted lamps, allowing the materials to take centre stage. When lit, the light softly filters through the delicate washi paper, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The Designers Behind the Lamps

Shigeru Uchida (1943–2016) was a renowned Japanese designer who created several of Asano’s iconic lamps, including the Paper Moon series, where washi and bamboo are combined in simple, sculptural forms.

Daisaku Chou is a Japanese designer who created Andon Triangle for Asano – a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Japanese andon lantern, defined by its distinctive triangular form.

At Studio Hafnia, you’ll find a curated selection of Asano’s handcrafted lamps designed by Shigeru Uchida and Daisaku Chou. From the distinctive Paper Moon lamps to the contemporary Andon Triangle – each piece rooted in the Japanese tradition of paper lanterns.
