A Japanese porcelain cup without a handle, decorated with purple camellia flowers, soft green leaves and a warm, dark brown rim. The glaze is cream white with a fine crackle, and one side carries a smoky grey-green wash, so every cup looks slightly different. 310 ml – roomy enough for a proper cup of tea.
The camellia – tsubaki – flowers in Japan in late winter, when little else does, and for centuries it has stood for beauty and dignity in Japanese art and tea culture. The cup is Mino ceramics from the Gifu prefecture, where everyday tableware has been fired for Japanese homes for more than 400 years.
The round, handle-free shape is the classic Japanese teacup: you hold it by the sides and feel the warmth through the porcelain. It works just as well as a small bowl for yoghurt, nuts or dessert.
