Traditional matcha bowls from Japan – created for whisking and enjoying matcha. Classic chawan forms with the right depth and opening for use with the bamboo whisk (chasen).
What is a Matcha Bowl (Chawan)?
A matcha bowl – in Japanese called chawan – is the tea bowl where matcha is both whisked and enjoyed. Its deep form and wide opening make it easy to work with the chasen and achieve a creamy, foamy matcha.
Shape, Size and Expression
Most matcha bowls measure around Ø 11–13 cm and stand firmly during whisking. The glazes range from natural, earthy tones to glossy and richly colored expressions – each bowl with its own unique character.
How to Use a Matcha Bowl
- Sift the matcha into the bowl to avoid clumps.
- Add hot water (approx. 80 °C – not boiling).
- Whisk in quick, light movements (often in an “M” or “W” motion) until a fine foam appears.
- Drink directly from the bowl – the rim is shaped for a pleasant drinking experience.
