Wall Tapestries – Japanese Noren and Furoshiki Textile Art

At Studio Hafnia you will find a curated selection of Japanese wall tapestries, including traditional noren and graphic furoshiki textiles. Each piece reflects Japanese craftsmanship, cultural heritage and contemporary interior aesthetics.

A wall tapestry adds texture, warmth and depth to a space. In Japanese tradition, textiles have long been used as room dividers, doorway curtains and wall art – combining function with visual calm.

Our Japanese wall tapestries are crafted in natural materials such as cotton, hemp and linen, often hand-dyed or hand-printed in small editions.

What Is a Wall Tapestry?

A wall tapestry is a textile-based wall decoration that combines art and function. Unlike framed prints, a tapestry introduces softness, structure and a tactile quality to the interior.

Wall tapestries can:

  • be mounted directly on the wall
  • be hung using a wooden rod
  • serve as a room divider
  • be placed in doorways

In Japan, the most iconic form is the noren – a split-panel textile traditionally used in homes and tea houses.

Noren – Traditional Japanese Wall Tapestries

Noren are classic Japanese textile curtains, traditionally used in homes, restaurants and shops. They create a soft transition between spaces while serving as both decoration and practical divider.

At Studio Hafnia, our Japanese noren are made in natural fabrics with motifs ranging from minimal geometric compositions to traditional Japanese symbols.

All noren include a wooden hanging rod and are ready to mount.

Furoshiki – Japanese Textile Art for the Wall

Furoshiki are traditional Japanese wrapping cloths that today are also used as decorative wall tapestries and textile art.

Our furoshiki are selected in collaboration with Link Collective, a brand known for merging Japanese textile tradition with modern graphic design.

Furoshiki are sold without hanging hardware. A dedicated wooden hanger can be purchased separately.

How to Hang a Wall Tapestry

Hanging depends on the textile type:

  • Noren include a wooden rod for easy installation.
  • Furoshiki require a separate wooden hanging system.

Proper installation highlights the textile’s natural drape and proportions while creating a calm and balanced visual expression.

Wall Tapestries as Art and Interior Element

Japanese wall tapestries function both as wall art and as architectural textile elements. They introduce softness, acoustic warmth and a refined contrast to minimalist interiors.
